I've joined about half a dozen, and they're already far superior to the nonsense of Facebook ...

There are search engines that do this kind of thing. Yahoo is flogging a dead horse as usual and it's a complete waste of time. DuckDuckGo and Blekko are the two main alternatives to Google and Bing.
