|
|
Last Wednesday Yahoo! said its search engine index, boosted by a recent upgrade, now covers 20.5 billion online objects - 19 billion documents and 1.5 billion images - nearly double that of rival Google, and some three times more than industry estimates of 6-8 billion for its own previous index, reports the AP. Google says it tracks 11.3 billion objects: nearly 8.2 billion web pages, 2.1 billion images, and about a million objects consisting of material from its group discussions.
As of June, Google held a 36.9 percent share of the U.S. search engine market, with Yahoo at 30.4 percent, according to comScore figures. However, Yahoo now has bragging rights as the biggest search engine in terms of index size.
Can it make a big difference for them?

The big question will be - can they effectively search all those documents and come back with relevent stuff? Also, what exactly are they indexing that makes this index so large? If Google has any sense they'll stick with slow increases as Joe Public doesn't really care about size of the index, but more about whether it comes back with utter rubbish.

I also find Yahoo results more relevant than Google listings and this news adds further weight to the heavy competition in the search engine market place. _________________ My Sites: The Management Blog | The Environment Site | Management Training |

I think people will still use Google as their main search engine due to relevancy. But they may also check out Yahoo!'s listings alot more now just incase it brings up a few documents that they would have not found using Google. _________________ Affiliate Programs Directory – lists over 1,200 programs.

IMO, Google is generally better at super competitive keywords. Yahoo is better at other keywords as it applies keyword proximity. _________________ Online Education :: Training Forum
