I don't know if phpBB has updated since I last used it but deleting mass spam wasn't very easy. vB was much easier in that regard.

It's never easy when one idiot takes it upon himself to post 30+ messages on a Sunday evening.

It's being tidied up now...

Forums are hard work ay! what do you all think about the link luv mod thats come out for wordpress? initially i really liked it, but what happens if everyone starts posting comments only on blogs with linkluv and not on anything else? i just mean some blogs in particular might start noticing that they dont get the comments that they once were because a lot of people who use the net regularly want links that count?

I've restrained myself from commenting on this issue for several days now. But it's just got to be too much. Now I'll only look at a posting if the most recent one on the thread is by a name I know and trust.

This otherwise excellent forum with lots of very interesting people is being over-run with lots of complete rubbish. I know you can't be everywhere all of the time. Perhaps you could give some of us a soft delete option.

I like this forum, but it's being spoiled by those who have no interest in it. I think you should reclaim it for those members who do care and who genuinely enjoy the place.

A soft delete option?

If there was a way, I'd gladly look at it... do you know of something?

Also, if any of the regulars would like to assist with moderating, do please drop me a PM. On Aardvark Travel, we have a good team of regulars helping delete/ban/etc. but here on the Business Forum - and also on the Sport Forum - it's largely down to me.

Thanks

Aaron

Hi Aaron

I also run a phpBB forum. The way we deal with spam is that we created a private board - we call ours the Spam Dump. Mods can shift anything dodgy in there pending a decision by an admin who then comes along and bars the person and usually blocks their IP number too.

If the mod has been too hasty, the admin can re-instate the comment (although posts can't be merged back into threads). This soft delete option is most useful in borderline cases. Where it's Nokia phones or Nike shoes stuff, we usually just hit the delete button, bar the person, and block the IP - but that's because we have several active admins in different time zones.

How I imagine it might work on Aardvark is that if someone dumped 30 spams on here, a mod could hit the delete button on 29 of them and shift one to the Spam Dump for an admin to take further action.

There are probably plenty of other ways to deal with the problem - including not letting the spammers in, in the first place.

Hi Kay

We have a private forum like that already. Actually, what we do on the travel board is we have two private forums for moderators. Originally, it was just one where we used to discuss the misdemeanours of various members, or flag up any suspicions, as well as move spam posts across (enabling us to keep a record of things like IP, etc.). After a while, we decided the place was being flooded with the moved material and that other discussions couldn't be followed so easily so we created one just for spam dumping and kept the other one for moderator discussions. That seems to have worked quite well. Here we have just one moderator forum at the moment but I think there's the same need for a second.

As for the spam here and on the other Aardvark boards, the problem sometimes is simply the sheer volume of the stuff... Evil or Very Mad

Thanks for your PM. Will be happy to add your as a moderator. Eagle... you are of course still welcome as before, but I know you're busy busy... Wink

Aaron
