I've just been on a presentation training course which has fundamentally changed the way I communicate verbally
People actually sit up and listen when I talk now. Stunning!

One little tip stuck in my mind
Raise your eyebrows and your voice goes up
It's bizarre but it works

Laughing

As a woman, I often prefer to speak a bit lower. Somehow speaking in a high voice seems to lack authority. I'd not want to speak in a higher voice. Interesting, though.

The speed you talk at matters as well.

Maybe you need to frown more then, Kay...

Great article!

I found myself doing that (speaking too quickly) when I met a prominent businessman in KL. I was nervous. I wanted to interest him. And I wanted to show that I had lots to offer. I can't do sales and it wasn't a sales pitch anyway.

I was starting to give myself a headache with all this high-speed babble. Gawd knows how he felt being on the receiving end. I realised I was doing it, took a deep breath, and apologised and said that I'd been nervous and keen to please. The meeting proceeded very well after that and we reached a mutually beneficial agreement. (Is it unwise to mention the pints of Guinness he ordered for us?)

Ha ha, just seen your comment, Paul. I'm difficult enough to deal with never mind encouraging me to frown. I deliberately try to smile a lot of the time (it is an effort for a grumpy person like me) but if you have a smile on your face - without looking demented - then you already score points before you even start.

Kay tried this out on me as an experiment by asking me to come up with a sentence and say it out loud, then repeat it with raised eyebrows.

I made a conscious effort to do the repeat at the same pitch as the original sentence. Nevertheless, Kay thought the repeat was higher. I'm not convinced that it really was (I've got a good ear for these things), but on the other hand I could feel myself being forced to speak further forward and higher in my mouth - which has the effect of improving clarity and projection.

So this sounds like a well worthwhile tip - which I'd certainly follow. My only worry would be about looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights while I'm speaking. Embarassed

Drooling while I suck up the blood..

Oh, give me spammers. I love 'em. They're great for pie fillings and making black puddings. Blood is quite a good thickener for gravy too.
