Next Tuesday is World Car Free Day so I thought it'd be interesting to see how most of us travel to work.

I know some of you walk down the hallway but the rest of you fill in the poll Smile

I normally drive. It's about 5 and a half miles, so I could ride it on my BMX, but the usual excuses stop me most days:

1) I'd have to get up earlier
2) I might get rained on
3) I'll end up all sweaty
4) I might get hit by a meteor

If I bought a proper bike with gears and stuff as opposed to my BMX it would probably be a lot easier.

For much of the year, I've been walking as it's only a mile. Lately, though, I've been going by car as I've often had quite a bit to carry back home (eg. shopping).

By car as it's kindof tricky doing 30 miles by bike especially considering I've got Shap fell in the way - very steep hill one side and I'd have to ride up that side at night. Also not sure how I'd get from here to Shrewsbury either as that would take quite some time at weekends.

Oh and yeah, there's Alex's point 4 which is a very good one.....not that the majority of space rocks we see land would be troubled by the roof or windscreen of a car. Smile

Could take the train, but that means 2 trains and last time I checked it arrived in Kendal at 8.30 and left I think at 6 which doesn't give much flexibility timewise. Plus it'd be a min of half an hour to get to / from the train station at home.

They can keep their World Car Free Day for London and places where you can actually do this kindof stuff.

Interesting article on the BBC site today showing the difference in people's journey time to work in the UK, depending on whether they work in London or not.

Article is here, but this graph pretty much says it all.

Interesting stuff . I'm really lucky, Paul. I can drive to work including school run and it still only takes 10 mins. We also try walking a few days a week when possible and that takes 40 mins.
If you think about the 1940's most people walked to work or the train station, kids walked or very rarely bus to school and lots of mums stayed at home and shopped in the village/town where they lived!

Nice graph Paul, I know for one thing that my brother works in London and it takes him 30mins by train and then 15mins on foot to get to work but I guess the higher standard of work/pay makes up for it.
I've been pretty lucky as it goes
both my previous and current workplaces have been around 25-30minutes on foot!
a walk is always good in the morning I guess
It's important to have breakfast though Smile

I'm afraid its always been public transport for me! It used to take me an hour or more to get me to work! With one job I had to get a bus for 45 mins or more then walk for another 45 mins, imagine that in winter, freeeezing cold. No wonder I sometimes never bothered to go to work., now if only I had helicopter of some sort - it would be really nice to fly to work.
