That's a great term to be ranking so well for. Does it bring much business in?

some Wink Most of my work is on reccommendation though.

The posts that get me the most traffic odly are stolen web content and google telephone numbers.

How do you mean? Like scraper sites? I didn't have you down for any of them...

No I wrote posts about dealing with stolen content, and posted some of the UK google telephone numbers. And loads of people have linked to these which brings in buckets of traffic.

I really need to get a mailing list going Smile

Yeah, that's the other thing. They seem to think they add credibility to themselves by pretending to be in the USA or UK.

I've been having quite a few problems with stolen content. In fact I spent a big part of yesterday dealing with it. It's hassle I could well do without.

Part of me is resigned to it going on, but letting Google sort them out with the hope that they recognise the original source.

Is there much that can be done if some guy in a bedsit in Turkey scrapes my blog content? I'm not sure...

File a DMCA report with Google and they will be removed from the index. that will stop the scraping having any affect on your contents ranking.

I tried that... the little runt submitted a "counter notification".

Quote:
Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

We have received the DMCA counter notification provided at the bottom of this email in response to the complaint you filed with us. As described in 17 U.S.C. 512(g), by this e-mail, we are providing you with the counter notification and await your notice (in not more than 10 days) that you have filed an action seeking a court order to restrain the counter-notifier's allegedly infringing activity. If we do not receive such notice from you, we will not remove the AdSense publisher from our program.

If you have any questions please contact our DMCA agent at 650.214.4053.

Regards,

The Google Team

I tried replying to Google on this, pointing out numerous further instances of scraping (for crying out loud, the images he stole that were within the posts even had our URL watermarked on them!) and just got told "Please note that we do not accept add-on requests for removal. For all new requests, we require that you submit a signed and completed DMCA complaint as you have previously done."

At that point, the whole process just struck me as tedious. It seemed as though I could go through the process of doing that with each and every infringement (very time consuming since there were many), only to have him submit these counter notifications, whatever they are (I assume a counter notification is where he is trying to claim to be the original source and say that I've stolen from him...?!)

Crikey... well done... what was the URL again? And, out of sheer nosiness, do you mind me asking "does it make money?"? < braces himself for the response "no, I don't mind you asking but I'm not going to answer" > Razz

That's plain stupid. When the counter-claim's as blatantly specious as that, they've got no excuse for washing their hands of it.

It contrasts markedly with our experience with duplicate content on blogspot - but then again the person copying was a student based in the UK rather than someone seeking to profit from our content commercially.

Oh maybe I was just unlucky... I see the ones I reported (which I think includes the ones with the images with my URL on them) are no longer on the site in question. But that still leaves me with the task of sifting through reporting the others.

It's fairly blatant as you'll see from bestholidaychoice.com/interview-with-helen-howitt-co-founder-of-sheepskin/

You'll notice the original source is fairly obvious from the text towards the tail-end of the article (where he's stripped out the hyperlink). Even the image is being directly linked from our domain (yeah, I know I could do something about that...)

The little sh*t even has the cheek to put a copyright notice on the bottom of the page!

Whenever someone hotlinks to my images, I immediately replace them with a damning one.

like
I AM AN IMAGE STEALING XXXXXX, I HAVE STOLEN THIS IAMGE FOR

or. go to www.mysite for the best deal in town.

One problem, I suppose, is that I do get some people who hot-link to the images without asking but I don't actually mind...

eg. expensiva.com/luxury-on-web/interview-with-helen-howitt-co-founder-of-sheepskin/

Yes, they use the image and the first bit of the text, but they at least provide a link for the remainder.
