I know this has been touched on before, and often the answer is "Dont go with a free service, get your own hosting and use Wordpress"

BUT

If you cant afford hosting, then what is the very best free blogging service? and why?

Blogger provides free hosting - they were also bought by Google a while back so your Google account will work with them.

If I remember correctly Wordpress offer a free, hosted, solution as well.

Personally I use Wordpress and find it an excellent tool. There's a large number of very good templates out there for it as well.

I always use blogger.com and have found it to be as good as what one is likely to need. It is Google owned now (they bought it out a couple of years ago) and this free blogger has most features you are likely to need and its easy to use.

I think that one of the reason of Blogger popularity is their permissive policy: you can set up a blog about anything, advertise your business, and obviously put Adsense everywhere.

Other blogging platforms are years ahead of it (sure Wordpress.com is), but you have way less freedom and/or you are forced to host their advertising.

Are you saying you have less freedom with Wordpress? I'd say it was the other way around, and that you have far more.

The question should be 'Which is the best free blogging service for me'?

- How so you want to blog? PC, mobile phone, webcam, all of these?
- What do you want to blog about?
- Do you want to integrate microblogging services such as twitter, BrightKite, Friendfeed, Google Reader shares, etc?
- Do you often want to share links or snippets from websites?

Some common blogs are Wordpress, Tumbler, LiveJournal, Seesmic

Wordpress for me. Have used it for years.

However, I'm talking about wordpress.com here, which provides templates and themes and is far easier to use, and not wordpress.org which is an entirely different animal all together.

blogger.com (free)

however if you have any tech knowelege and are capable of using Wordpress then do it. Hosting is soooo cheap and you have complete control over everything. Much better IMO and hosting is your only cost Smile

Both Blogger and wordpress are the best for blogging and you can select any of them according to your requirements. Both of them are being used for adsense also.

also tumblr and squidoo, though not exactly a blogging platform, but you can use these as free hosting pages for your marketing

I like Blogger and have often come across Blogger sites online when searching for stuff. I find Blogger sites fun to make with their template designer. Perfect for personal blogs. I'm not a fan of Squidoo at the moment as they are picky, I think it is more for affiliate marketing. Tried a few others like Webs, Jimbo, Weebly but I'm not a fan.
