Man, especially if you aren't married and tied down with kids, go for having a side-business that could be scalable if you need it to be. You are investing in yourself and taking a gamble but the payoff can be great - the freedom and control is hard to beat. Also, and I think a lot of people don't really address this, it is a fantasic security blanket to have a second source of income that is independent of your current job.

It doesn't matter if it is washing windows or creating custom tshirts, convert a year's time of TV, gaming, or surfing into this powerful option for yourself!

Technically, I'm employed. But since I own the one and only share in the company that employs me, then for all intents and purposes I'm as good as self-employed. Smile

I'm tied down with kids now and have a totally diffeernt lifestyle than 10 years ago. But man, how great it was being able to have frequent 3 or 4 day weekends! Long hours lots of dues paying but eventually it worked out. I just feel if someone is passionate about something or if they are very money aware and like to plan long-term, building a secondary income stream can be fun and rewarding and is best attempted before kids (generally speaking)!

dantill is my second business, well my two childrens. i know that starting a business is quite easy if one starts it has a side line. thats how i started NGF 15 years ago, i was working nights at our local airport and so could spare a bit of time each day to earn extra . it just got to the point where there wasnt enough hours in the day to do my work load and so jacked the airport job. i thought after a few years about my kids future and thought back to how i started my existing business. it started from nothing. if i started one business from scratch, then i start another one. the question is... how big does one want the business to grow? thats the gamble!!!

So it took a good few years to achieve being successfully self-employed?

MassDebation!? Woohoo! Well, I was fortunate in that it only took me around 6 months to one year before I had enough work to deem myself "successful."

I had a staff job in my field then quit to go freelance and never looked back. After 6 months or so I had enough work and after a year or two i was rejecting work and able to pick and choose, raise rates, etc. working as a freelancer. There were a few years I got hired staff again because I was made an offer I couldn't refuse and was treated like gold (lunches bought, car service to and from home, etc.) but then went freelance again once I moved too far to work there.

Am currently in the process of planning my prospective trouble 'n' strife's home business. She is employed as an art teacher and she is a brilliant photographer and she is also creatively minded in creating recycled home made paper objects and accessories. The trouble that I foresee is the time it is going to take to get this business going and then maintaining.

I admire 24hours ability to get his business running between 6 months and a year. That is what I am hoping to achieve, but we are both working long days and can't see the light at the end of the tunnel yet. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I offfered myself literally 24/7 and didn't say no to anyone ... I was like a nut .. I even offered to learn their room and gear on my own time so that if they call me in an emergency I am not raw to their set up .. took a lot out of me but by a year I was a true blue freelancer, able to squeeze in those three day weekends!!
