I want to align form elements to the center, and I'm using "text-align: center;"; however, this is not working for some reason. The following is the code I have:
Code:

...

<tr>
    <td class='row1' style='text-align: center;'>
    </td>
    <td class='row1' style='text-align: center; vertical-align: top;'>
        <textarea name='message' rows='10' cols='80' wrap='virtual' tabindex='3' class='post' onselect='storeCaret(this);' onclick='storeCaret(this);' onkeyup='storeCaret(this);'></textarea><br>
        <!-- BEGIN smilies -->
        <img src="{quick_reply.smilies.URL}" border="0" onmouseover="this.style.cursor='hand';" onclick="emoticon(' {quick_reply.smilies.CODE} ');" alt="{quick_reply.smilies.DESC}" title="{quick_reply.smilies.DESC}" />
        <!-- END smilies -->
        <INPUT TYPE=button CLASS=BUTTON NAME="SmilesButt" VALUE="{L_ALL_SMILIES}" ONCLICK="openAllSmiles();">
        <br />
        <input type='button' name='quoteselected' class='liteoption' value='{L_QUOTE_SELECTED}' onclick='javascript:quoteSelection()'></td>
</tr>

...

What am I doing wrong here?

You must be using a non-standards-compliant browser (IE?), because your coding is correct. See if this helps.

to keep it standards compliant you shold probably define it in you stylesheet and then wrap a div around your table:

why even use tables for this. I would just use CSS. You might want to try that
