I am interested in the basic pages in a website. Can anyone please tell me what it should be, ie. Home, About, Contact Us, Request Quote, etc.

If anyone can please extend the list, I would really appreciate it Smile

It depends on what you do.

Many people have a contact page, an about us page, when this information should really be all over the site, same as FAQ's etc.

there is no standard. before you create your pages, think what you are trying to accomplish with your site. once you know that, you will be able to design the structure of your site that accomodates your visitors.

I'm no expert but I think a Website should serve the basic who, what, where, when and how.

...and just as important - why? (what is the prpose of the site?)

When you answer that question - the pages needed should become obvious...

I think you've covered the bases for an online business. For a business where you travel to the client premesis (e.g., mobile dog grooming or carpet cleaning), you might want a "Customer Endorsements" page or a before/after photo gallery.

I agree with mvb that there is no standard.

A personal site would have a different menu than a website of a corporation.

Yes gamer1... MVB and Alan have hit it on the head. The why is the most important thing. get that - and the rest is then clear.

Well I guess:

Home page
about us
services/products (if appropiate)
contact us
faq
and there are definitely going to be 3 or 4 more basic ones which are directly related to whatever your site will be about.

Site maps aren't compulsory. Some people argue that if such a thing is necessary then your site navigation hasn't been done properly in the first place.

A viewable site map helps, but what is really very important is the other types of sitemaps most people forget. They are:
sitemap-video.xml
urllist.txt
Web.sitemap
sitemap.html
sitemap.ror
sitemap.rss
sitemap.xml
sitemap-base.xml
sitemap-code.xml
sitemap-image.xml
sitemap-mobile.xml
sitemap-news.xml
and don't forget the robot.txt file.

I create a sitemap.htm and add all my pages, then I create the others. Yahoo (Bing) use the urllist.txt a lot and Google only uses the sitemap.xml

As these are the first files a search robot looks at, it can see at a glance which pages have been updated recently, they are then re-indexed. So my advice is everytime you update a page, also update your sitemaps.

I have created an article about sitemaps and when I have made more posts, I can then submit the URL
