Besides leaving the hospital with a birth certificate and a clean bill of health, baby Mila Belle Howells got something she won't likely use herself for several years: her very own Internet domain name.

Seems a bit OTT to me Confused

Err...yes, especially when they name the baby after they've checked the domain is available!? That's just nuts...!

Can't entirely see the point to be honest of any of these things, especially as the moment the kids are old enough to figure out the password it'll all get deleted. Afterall, do parents actually ever look at their kids photos 10 years down the line? I know mine wouldn't if I could find the darned things. Smile

Does seem a bit excessive doesn't it. Very unlikely that domain names will stay the same for that number of years anyway.

That's the thing - I don't know what will replace them or come alongside, but it's simply not going to be possible for all the people who want a domain to get one eventually. Then again, I suppose they said that a few years ago and we're still getting them....a bit like "we'll run out of IP addresses soon" etc.

I notice Realnames never really tookoff, but then that was probably just not going to happen really especially as most browsers just go to a search page when you type in a name.

Perhaps not for a baby - but how many of us own our own names? I do.... I bought my wife hers as a gift. And we were talking about buying a friend hers for her birthday soon...

Quite a low cost gift - but very personal if you think about it - especially if you point it at a blog, or Facebook profile etc.

Though I do find searching for a name before naming the baby itself somewhat exreme!

Wonderif there´s a baby out there called ´Make Money From Spurious Get Rich Quick Schemes On The Internet Dot Com JONES yet? Very Happy

I bought domain names for our two boys after they were born. Unfortunately the domains I'd really like to have got were gone, but I got something close enough in each case. For now, the domains have websites and act as blogs for each of them. Whether they'll ever be any use beyond that, I have no idea.

I think quite a lot of people would like to have their own domain name. I have mine, although I don't use it for anything. I guess it's partly to stop anyone else getting it and doing something unpleasant with it.

What on earth would I do with it? I've really no idea.

Going back to Alan's question - how many people here own their own name.com?

My name is fairly common, so the best I've been able to manage is getting the .co.uk with a hyphen and the .net with a hyphen.

According to http://www.namestatistics.com (admittedly based on US data) I have the #13 most common male first name and the #2 most common last name. Shocked

Dave couldn't get his (don't know if he wanted it anyway). Cool David is rather common!

I share my name with a pro golfer (golf, yuk!), a writer of romantic fiction (really, really, it's not me, honestly!), and someone who had a prominent position in new media journalism (I probably wouldn't mind if people thought that was me).

So, Paul, do you do anything with your own name domain?

Well... nothing too serious... I have an old blog where you can buy me a pint. That's about it. Wink

I did wonder about doing a generic site for everyone out there with the same name, complete with forum, etc. a la Dave Gorman, just for fun.

FWIW, I have quite a chequered history. As you can see, I'm quite a sporty individual, having made it to number 4 in the world at squash, having achieved an Olympic gold medal for ice hockey, and having played played football, rugby and cricket at a professional level.

What on earth prompted a three year old thread to be dug up? Laughing

Well, Adi. I'm not a fan of people who go grave digging to find any excuse to do self promotion or re-open old arguments, but if I find something which I haven't seen before, then why not? I thought it was an interesting topic and perhaps the discussion hadn't run its course. I saw no harm in re-opening it.

I still think it's an interesting subject (which you raised in the first place). Cool
