Swine flu has shut a few schools in the UK already and travel shares have been hit by the outbreak. How is your business dealing with it?

There's a video here on YouTube about the kind of things businesses are doing (or not)

I keep reading about this swine flu in the news, but otherwise there's absolutely nothing happening as far as we're concerned.

I work in travel and it's not affecting me one bit so far (and I don't expect it to).

I know at the time the news broke that British Airways was cited as one of the travel shares to be adversely affected. They dropped quite sharply from 163.9p on 24th April to 143.1p on 28th, but have since already bounced back to 173.9p today as fears about the spread of the virus aren't as bad as initially thought.

This is just a product of media hype. Whats more dreadful was Dengue because it kills hundreds in a small town alone and if to include other places it will reach thousands or even millions if to cover the world. This swine flu affects thousands - covered the whole world....Rolling Eyes They should have informed the public to practice proper hygiene in its truest sense and not over exaggerating the news. Can you imagine the effect it takes with Mexico?

My client a Mexico hotel, is in big big trouble. I made a formula that explains it all

Drug War + Economic Crisis + Swine Flu = 80% canceled booking + 48% total traffic drop for this month.

After this quarter they probably gonna retrench.

LOL!

Dengue was also mentioned earlier. I can tell you from personal experience that this is a horrendous thing to get. I was always quite flippant about it in India - where we were given frequent warnings about it, but nothing ever happened. Then in Thailand, when its existence was denied by official bodies, I got really, really ill with dengue. There are different types of dengue, though, and not all are killers. If you get it, just make sure you know what you're dealing with (check stools for internal bleeding etc).

You're supposed to go to a hospital straight away if you suspect that you have dengue. Despite having good international medical insurance, I self-prescribed and stayed at home. Dengue is horrible but unless you get the haemorrhagic version of the virus, chances are you'll survive. Smile

The cynical, hard-headed business person inside me wants to get it quite soon, because then I'll be available to cover for all the people that get it afterwards...

But the bit of me that really hates being ill is hoping I avoid it altogether!

At the end od the day I can work from home if needed and still carry out all of the work I do for clients so I'm not too worried (other then really not wanting to be the subject of these terrible jokes!)

Is it so likely that people will get it though? I know that the NHS were recommending all staff get the swine flu jab this week but what are the chances of actually contracting it?
