Microsoft® Office Accounting Express is an easy to use accounting package that works with other Office applications you already know.

You can download it for free at http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/accountingexpress/FX101729681033.aspx

QuickBooks offers a free cut-down version of their full product. What a complete pain in the bum that was. They bombarded me with emails and messages telling me to upgrade - well, it was free so I guess I should have expected it. But next, without any prior warning, I got the message that I had to register to continue using the free service - and registration is done by phoning someone in the US. Rolling Eyes Result - I lost all my data.

Verdict - I would rather get swine flu than go anywhere near QuickBooks again. Evil or Very Mad

Hmmm... that sounds very dodgy. At the very least I would have thought they should be allowing you to retrieve YOUR data.

I expect I possibly could retrieve my data if I jumped through their hoops. I got the message that I had to register to continue using the system. And to register I would have had to call a number in the US. I had only been playing around with the thing so see how it worked and whether or not I liked it, so I didn't lose much.

The main reason I mentioned it is to warn people off using QB. I wrote about it on another forum and one person there replied that he had a client who got stung by QB after five years of using them. The general consensus was that QB is one to be avoided.

Since you already had a thread about free accounting software, I thought it was worth adding the warning here too. As you say - very dodgy. Smile

Rolling Eyes Do you really think that people who are capable of finding and using a forum such as this one won't know how to use a search engine? Tsk.

Can we get back on topic now, please?

What other free online accountancy systems might be worth a try?

i've had a look at a few and decided to continue to operate through an Excel model i designed and developed.
i see cash forecasting as the most important part of accounting for a business, which i do each week. No simple accounting package I've found offers this.
At some point I'll move over to cloud based Liquid Accounts- probably when I've enough volume to warrant it.

Thanks, Martyn. We've been using our own spreadsheets. Some of the accounting/book-keeping systems are good but they're not very appropriate for our needs. In some cases there are too many bells and whistles. In other cases what they offer is just completely inappropriate for our online business.

Maybe there's a business opportunity there - create the software to cater for this "new" industry. But it's not new now, is it? It's been on the go for well over a decade. So why do all the accountancy packages I've ever seen seem to be geared up for more traditional businesses?

oddly enough I'm using an Excel model right now designed for a 5 year financial forecast.

The guy who did it is called Result Logic and he's set up in business to sell Excel models into clients as bolts ons to off the shelf packages

I'm curious to know how you can be forecasting in this way. It's possible to spot trends and extrapolate, but in internet business it can be unpredictable. You've no idea what's coming in month by month. The only way I can keep the cash flow going and manage my working capital is to have a buffer of savings. It's impossible to predict in any month if the ins will meet the outs. Some months are great and some are bad, it's the cash reserves that enable the bills to be paid in the bad months.
