I know I say this every year, but it's a farce, isn't it?

It would be interesting to see how universities are reacting to this. Traditionally you've had a good idea of the kind of grades required to get into particular schools. So Oxbridge/Russell Group schools would require A's and so on. I wonder if there's a trend now where lesser institutions are also requiring A grades purely because of the inflation in grades?

That's an interesting point, Adi. As you say, there always used to be a 'going rate' but how will that be affected now half the population is expected to go to uni?

By all means give people more education, but perhaps concentrate more on the trades rather than academia. It devalues 'real' degrees and doesn't make the recipients any more fit for the workplace. It's just totally ... stupid.

As I understand it, Adi, that is what is happening. And many people are unlikely to even get to University with grades that previously would have got them through.

According to The Independent, there are six students fighting for every University place.

One thing I read after the A Level results is that if you look deeper into the stats then the increase isn't happening. For instance if you look at the pass rate for so called harder subjects like maths and the sciences then average grades havn't budged much at all, with some even falling. So the overall average has increased because of more students studying easier subjects.

Hehe, well I am tempted to suggest that a pass mark is obtainable for getting your name right but that would detract from those who worked hard for the qualification. I am hoping to pick up on some of the brilliant kids that miss out on the university places. However I am not holding my breath (turning slightly blue)

You'd be surprised. Some people probably can't. Take this guy, for instance... he couldn't spell ACDC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oRQTOcGqvI

I had to hire an admin person ages ago (admittedly this was where English wasn't the first language). There were plenty of CVs submitted for me to pick and choose interview candidates from. But there is one that will always stick in my mind.

In the section asking for educational qualifications he'd written "intermidiot".

I realy do hope he doesn't apply for my canberra office when it opens, what would he make of RF and QPSK. I'd never get any courses to run. Still I do hope all the folk who gained the results they wanted go on to use them.
