Rumours are currently circulating that Google Messenger is to be launched in the fairly near future to hook into it's Gmail, Orkut and search results. Although not confirmed by Google, the domain gmessenger.com was aquired in May using the Domains by Proxy service.
The rumours suggest that they would use the program "Mundu Messenger" from India which can also interact with MSN, Yahoo, ICQ and others to provide another freebie for the Google masses.

That's certainly an interesting development. Do you think its good that Google are diversifying like this? Is it Wall Street that's pressurising them to create new income streams? _________________ My Sites: The Management Blog | The Environment Site | Management Training |

It partly depends how they plan to make money from this although I'd guess we could have Adsense depending on what you type in the messages - watch the privacy people jump on that one!
I suppose it's not that far from what their currently doing with the Gmail and Orkut although the latter might be a bit of a strange departure, but maybe it's just trying not to put all the eggs in one basket scenario or in financial terms "spreading the risk of investment".
Now if they start producing an alternative to Windows they could run into trouble as Microsoft have shown (the other way around), you can spread yourself too wide and end up doing nothing too well. Actually even worse, they could do an IBM from the 80's.

I was thinking along the lines of Yahoo actually. Started off mainly as a search engine/directory then branched out into more and more things to build a portal and the search side slipped allowing Google in.
There is a risk when stock markets are involved that things have to constantly expand for there to be deemed a worthy company. Look at Oxford University, one of the best universities in the world yet it doesn't have to grow on a regular basis to maintain this position.
Similar for Google. Its the best search engine at the moment. Dangerous game branching out into other areas, especially if its to please Wall Street. _________________ My Sites: The Management Blog | The Environment Site | Management Training |

Part of Yahoo's trouble was that they relied too much on being there first and traditional revenue generating streams like banner ad's which wasn't helped as you say by trying to go into way too many markets like financial, games and whatever else it does.
I'm amazed Yahoo managed to stay afloat and didn't sink like Excite, but then again I'm amazed Altavista still exists especially since they've never really got the idea of simple search....wake up you dozy directors before it's too late
Google from what I've read does intend to expand outwards from simply being a search engine since they the biggest data processing system ever seen and massive storage capacity without needing 1000's of people to run it. I have heard theres about 10 people run the Google computers.
The vast setup they have however could make them billions because once you have the systems in place they could use massive parallel processing and time based charging to say allow drug companies to test for new drugs in hours instead of weeks.
I would however suspect they'll keep the search system as this whole system they have running is best designed for finding and organising information - we're just the beta testers for what could be something of unreal size in the future. Thats where it all comes back to their core business - searching.
As you say stock markets can affect things, but the clever ones should leave Google alone as they have a proven track record for innovation and when you're making a billion or so a year from Adwords, you must be doing something right...

I'm sure that all major search engines are looking into this. _________________ Online Education :: Training Forum
