PostPosted: Thu Dec 17, 2009 11:10 am    Post subject: Content theft - I am VERY angry Reply with quote

From time to time I check how my sites are doing in Google, and I am totally sick of finding MY content ranking quite highly in Google as featured on Yahoo! Answers (yet another one today) which has been posted by some content thief. I wouldn't even mind so much if they posted a link to where they'd got the info from, but they cut'n'paste my original content word for word and pass it off as their own. Then they bask in the "glory" of gaining the rank of top contributor or whatever.

Of course, if we stole Yahoo!'s content, they would be right on us, but when people on Yahoo! steal ours, they make it our problem to jump through hoops and prove the theft. I have better things to do than to police their horrible site to find that they're publishing yet more stuff stolen from us. Evil or Very Mad

I'm so angry that I feel inclined to go and steal a load of stuff from Yahoo! and publish it on one of our sites. When they complain about the THEFT, I'll make them jump through all sorts of hoops to PROVE it.

OK, so I'm incandescent with rage. But is it not the case that a publisher is responsible for the content they publish? Or does that only apply to the little guys like us?

Don't get me started... I'm forever having a battle with this kind of thing.

Sorry, I'm not sure what the best solution is.

Paul

(PS - Got your email, thank you, and will be replying soon... it's busy, busy here as usual...)

Thanks for the support, Paul. Smile

Things weren't quite so bad this time because the theft was published on Yahoo! UK and Ireland and we were able to submit an abuse report online. The last times we had to do that it was Yahoo.com and we had to send faxes about the thing.

Dave had a closer look at the thief and in her profile she actually boasted in her profile about "I used to be at level 7 until my account was suspended". Rolling Eyes I wonder why on earth it was suspended. Evil or Very Mad

Considering that people like us take time to write original content for our websites, it's just so annoying when someone comes along and steals it for a cut'n'paste job.

I hate Yahoo! Answers with a real vengeance - it's full of liars, cheats, thieves, and illiterates. So there! Evil or Very Mad

It REALLY gets my goat when the copied stuff ranks above your own (the original). That's when it really sucks IMHO.

Take this example:

Interview with Alison Scott of Elegant Resorts is the latest post on a blog that I run.

I did a search on Google for:

"Vancouver Canada. I just felt very at home in the city" (which is a unique phrase from the entry)

...and it returned just one result. But it's not returning my site, it's returning yousaytoo.com/interview-with-alison-scott-of-elegant-resorts/147879 (I'm not linking deliberately)

There's no attempt to acknowledge source or to link. In fact, they describe themselves as an AdSense revenue sharing site.

I'm getting in touch with them now. It'll be interesting to see if they plan to share that revenue with me. Rolling Eyes Twisted Evil

GRRR! I feel your pain. At least the one I found was one below me in Google. I'd have loved to comment on the piece about it having been stolen, but the posting including the content stolen from me had already been closed for comments.

Short of policing Yahoo! Answers every day looking for more content theft, I can't think of anything else to do. If I find one where comments are still open, though, I'll be sure to point it out.

Just a thought, might it be worth telling Google about the duplicate content and theft?

Oops, Paul. We were posting at the same time. I've just seen your posting on ALTB. Nice one. I'm thinking of following suit.

I will definitely join you in this, because I'm sick of it too.

Thanks, Paul. Very Happy I hardly ever use Twitter but Dave does occasionally and he's going to give you some re-tweets too.

I'll also go on my usual foodie forum and alert them to this issue and tell them about your ALTB idiots and thieves posting. Twisted Evil

Great stuff... I've sent it over to a few other bloggers on Twitter. Hopefully some of them might pick up on it too.

Nice to see the thief is running a lot of AdSense on his site. Twisted Evil

Google doesn't usually take too kindly to people who break their T&Cs.

I tried to post a polite message saying "Please don't steal my content" but it won't go.

It's just another thief and an idiot. They need to be reported to Google so they get shut down.

C'mon everyone, let's report the content thieves. Twisted Evil
