I like to do business with people I "know" - even if I only met them on a forum. But quite often friends will ask us to do something for them. Sure, we could do it, but it never seems to work out well for us. That's why my company doesn't have many clients any more, we just do our own stuff.

But when a friend asks you for something that's fairly straightforward it's kinda hard to say no. And then you don't like to ask for money for it. I find it very difficult.

Does anyone else feel like this and, if so, how do you deal with it?

It's never advisable to make business with friends.. You can tie up your business but not have them as your partner.. Smile

I'm a great believer in not mixing friends with business. If a friend wants help with something, I'll tend to just do it. If it's a big job, though, it does get much more tricky... I'm always a little uneasy then and never sure of the best solution. Sure, I can quote for the work as I would to anyone else, but it doesn't sit well with me as I'm conscious that it's not really a normal business arrangement.

I have been burnt the few times I have actually helped any of my friends with any design work.

Its not like its my job or anything?

I now never mix friends or family with business.

Lol...

Where I come from, there used to be this slogan on lots of SME, it said
"Businesses will prosper when friends and family pay for services rendered".

I always used to have a laugh when I read it but its sooo true!! This way when friends and family see it, at least the decents one would pay for services rendered without having to ask. Not that it always worked though Laughing

Its not a great idea charging friends for anything IMO. I find it better to do work in kind, if you do a job for someone they do something for you. Like the way business used to be before money.

Its a tough one, best to be avoided.

I agree mostly. I don't usually want to do business with friends any more. But now I find that I make friends with people I do business with.

Where do you draw the line?

I enjoy making friends with people I have business relationships with. It's kinda hard to make a rule that I don't want to do business with them any more because we're friends now. Confused

Quite an awkward conversation to have, 'Hey mate, where's my money?'. One that's best to avoid altogether.
