I'm sick and tired of these annual "records" in our education system...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-11012369

"The pass rate for A-levels rose for the 28th year in a row, with 97.6% of entries gaining an E or above, up from 97.5% in 2009."

It's not like the good ol' days... Rolling Eyes

If you lower the standards it's quite easy to increase the pass rate. Rolling Eyes

I don't bother tuning in anymore. It's a foregone conclusion isn't it.

The thing is it's on a treadmill now. I mean lets say the Tories open up education to non-state schools who begin treating a-levels properly, resulting in a falling pass rate, then Labour will instantly jump on saying it's a terrible idea, falling standards, privatising education etc. and scrap the whole thing the first chance they get.

It is not necessary that Pass rate is high and standards is low. It depend upon your training, staff. What you are teaching and what techniques you are using to teach the students.

If you want to increase the standard with high passing rate then appoint the young teachers and with new teaching methodology.

I hope it will help you to improve your standard.

This does annoy me, I must say. It kind of belittles the exam results that I got, making them meaningless, or of less value than they actually were at the time - like a gold coin suddenly being the value of a copper one. If I had any gold coins that I didnt want I would cash them in to postal gold.

my gut feel is standards haven't changed much.
so what has?
teaching methods focusing more on coursework less on exams?

its about time we get back to achieving a Uni place with BCC not AAA
and they managed a comparable standard year on year

sure the good results reflect hard work. But standing back from one years results, there's no way anything like education can improve every year for 30 years on the run
and most people consider the results a running joke now

but good old education - they're so institutionalised, they take decades to change their ways even though change is obvious to everyone else
as you can imagine, I've had run ins with my kids' school who need a poker up their a*** Shocked
