Eyetracking studies have documented a dramatic gap in how users approach website images:

* Some types of pictures are completely ignored. This is typically the case for big feel-good images that are purely decorative.
* Other types of pictures are treated as important content and scrutinized. Photos of products and real people (as opposed to stock photos of models) often fall into this category.

It's an interesting point of view, but it's coming from Jakob Neilsen's site. That dinosaur who is stuck in a 1990s time warp. The fact that it's on his awful site would make me ignore any advice given there. The guy is nuts IMO.

OK, so he's rich and I'm not. It doesn't mean that he has anything more useful to say. Twisted Evil

I'm not super familiar with Jakob Neilsen, but the idea does strike a ring of truth. I mean, how many of us straight up ignore those giant pictures at the top of corporate websites? You know the one. Smiling white person, black person and brown person (one of them a woman) doing something completely random or useless to the company? Why bother if no one looks at them?

Wow you don't like him do you!

I get his monthly alert and find the content always worthy of a read.
Bit of a pain he's not got it on RSS feed and its not in the form of a blog.

Yeah, Martyn, you guessed right. I'm not a fan of JN.

Even back in 2005 when I was doing my MSc dissertation (on website usability) I said he was a dinosaur - and he still hasn't changed. But, you see, he is a guru and therefore he doesn't have to change. He can continue to spout his outdated nonsense and we all have to believe it because he is a guru. Aaaarrgghhh! Rambo

He seems to be making a big deal about 'proving' the point that it's a virtue to stay in the 1990s. Most webmasters I know move with the times and adapt as technology changes. He doesn't adapt. He doesn't need to change because he's rich and people hang on his every word.

Perhaps he's a very nice man in real life but I think he is a boring old git online.

Presumably he used eye tracking studies or something similar to arrive at this conclusion though?

Laughing

He's succeeding, Martyn. I know all about eye-tracking studies. And I also know what people don't like.

We had one of our sites redesigned and took eye-tracking into account. The users hated it and the revenue went down. We subsequently made it more pleasing to the eye and the site more or less went back to normal.

Yes, eye-tracking can give you an indication of how people use a site, but you should use such knowledge with moderation. A site that looks like it's been taking eye-tracking-theory steroids doesn't necessarily work better.

Bring on the common sense and don't get obsessed with theory! Twisted Evil

Just saying that if we don't know how he arrived at the conclusion we can't really say he's talking tosh can we? For all we know he's done extensive A/B testing on design variations and this has come up trumps. Of course he may not have done either Smile

Sure, but some people get their heads so stuffed full of theory that there's no space left for common sense. Yes, it is a Good Thing to know the rules, but equally you need to understand when and why to break them.

Someone who can only spout the theory at you isn't all that much use IMO.

Given that I have no sense of humour, I have no idea whether you're joking or not.

I had a bit of a brain melt-down today (aye, that'll make a change) and started a new forum about food. I'll do a guest blog for you if you visit my new forum (not yet fit for human consumption) and ask me some food-related questions. If your questions are too difficult for me to answer I will stick a big knife into your guts, so play nicely with me.

Have we got a deal?

Let me know when your forum is running and I'll happily post questions
I did research on raw food diets last year - so I've got some "tasty" stuff to include Cool

We got a deal, pal! (I'm Scottish so you can trust me.)

Raw stuff? Bleauggh! Smoke tabs, eat lard!

By the way, you're a lot nicer looking than I had imagined you to be. Very Happy

PS: I tried to make a comment on one of your blog postings but got the white screen of death. I don't know if it was because of my cr@ppy ISP or whether your server ran away and hid when it saw me. Confused
