Does anyone else get letters from "Domain renewal group"? It's an american company that sends out letters saying your domain is soon to expire, fill in the form with your bank details and we will fix it up at an expensive fee! 25 per year for a .com (which is seriously expensive?)

What they want you to do though is to transfer the domain to them, infact the one they posted out about still has another year and half to go. Did panic a little when it came though the first time.

Yeah, it's an old problem and there are several companies doing similar. Funnily enough our expat forum is #1 on Google for one of them because of a warning we wrote on there some time ago.

It's a fairly well-known "tactic", see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Registry_of_America

Unfortunately, there are still people who fall for it.

Yeah... we got one of their letters only last week as it happens, having not had one for probably a year or so.

Even in Canada we have those scams.

I really wonder how many people fall for this.

Here they come with a little return envelope to send them a check and i normally return that one empty then at least have to pay for postage Twisted Evil

Next time attach a brick to the envelope also (or put it all in a bigger envelope with a brick inside)... then they'll have to pay even more in postage. Wink

I've never gone as far as attacking a brick. Laughing I used to gather up all the other junk mail I'd received and stuff that into the envelope before sending it back.

I wouldn't recommend attacking a brick, Kay. Just attach one instead. Wink

I know! Laughing I meant attach, not attack! My fingers are dyslecsic.

Even so, it's funny that my fingers typed 'attack' when I'd intended to say 'attach'. Laughing I've heard of heart ruling head, this is a case of fingers ruling brain..

There is a deep meaning in all this. I'll ask my therapist about it. Meanwhile I will try my best not to attack any bricks.

We've noticed our customers are getting a lot more of these letters through recently too.

There are no much fresh trreads in domains section of this forum.
Such letters from domain registrars are like banking scams. Real banks never ask you for any sensitive informations, just by e-mail. But, people still get "hurted" by such schemes.
I use only the best quality services of GoDaddy (declining) and Namecheap (increasing) and do all my account changes when logged into account.
PEOPLE THINK !!!!!

Sure it's easy for us as we know but a lot of small companies let other take care of their web stuff and if they get a letter i am sure some will pay without checking.

I now (finally) got the privacy service so that they can't see my info and i hope that cuts back a bit in spam (snail mail, email and phone) as it started to really get out of hand.
