There have been at least two sentences dished out in the last 24 hours, relating to comments posted on Facebook.

April Jones: Matthew Woods jailed for Facebook posts (jailed for 12 weeks)

Facebook slur about soldier deaths: Azhar Ahmed sentenced (240 hours of community service and a 300 fine)

It's difficult to comment on these objectively without knowing precisely what was said (and it appears we don't know from at least the first case), but I can't say I have an awful lot of sympathy.

Interestingly, when I have read comments about these kinds of incidents, I regularly read things like "I'm glad I don't live in the UK" and comments about how backward we are, as well as things like "so much for freedom of speech".

What's your take on it? Should people be able to say what the hell they like, regardless of how much hurt/suffering/offence it may cause to others, or is it right that these kinds of cases are coming up in the courts and, in some instances, people are being sentenced?

No idea what was said in either instance, but it reminds me of the old saying we were taught as kids

"sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me"

To jail someone for being a dickhead seems a bit of a waste of police time to me.

Words can hurt! You should talk to some shamans and people who can see "beyond".
Every living species and "non-living" "things" got a kind of "soul". Words too.
When you deliver words of hate in big quantity, in long-run will change the destination(object) of your words (change for worst).
In every-day hectic living, people do not notice such slow changes. But...

The thing is also that words can lead to deeds and change thinking! Of course this can be good, but it can also be bad...
