You know how i have little ideas spring to mind, then i come here and ask you all if its a bad idea or good idea, well heres another....... Wink

Im thinking of having a small, mobile stall in the center of a busy town selling shots of drinks, and beers etc in plastic cups, for people looking for cheap drinks, if there passing by the stall, and branching out into more towns etc.

Im sure ive seen this in other countries like spain, but i dont see it here in Essex, good idea, bad idea?

I wouldnt be selling the drinks, as i couldnt be in more than 1 place at once, so ide employ people part time to do this, so is it my company that would need the alcahol license? And how much are they?

And what other licenses would i need to do this?

All opinions welcome Smile

Thanks

Matt Cool

Sorry to put a downer on the idea, BUT, most town centres have alcohol free zones outside of the bars. Yes a licence would be required and it would be unlikely that they would give one to a street vendor.

Sounds an interesting idea, but I can think of quite a few problems...

As far as I know, a person has to hold the licence to sell alcohol rather than the company so they'd be legally responsible if say one of the vendors sold to someone under 18. To get a licence in the first place I believe you need to pass a licencing exam as well as go through various criminal and such checks.

You'd then need a licence to trade on the streets from the local council although I don't think those are vastly expensive - maybe 200/year.

You'd then fall under environmental health regulations as you're serving food or drink and for a street stall that might be quite tough.

Then theres the problem of litter. You'd have to be able to show the council that you could keep the area around the carts litter free.

The British weather doesn't exactly lend itself to such activities. Unlike in Spain where it's fairly guaranteed to be warm, drinking whiskey in the rain from a plastic cup doesn't really appeal.

One thing that would concern me would be having the alcohol stolen which is quite a serious problem as Customs & Excise would have to investigate since they've lost tax revenue on it. Also this would impact on the insurance for the employees in case they were attacked.

As Mike mentioned, a lot of towns now have no-alcohol zones which would be a no-go for this.

I think it works in Spain for a number of reasons:

- Sunny weather
- Very low tax on alcohol
- Holiday culture of drinking
- Very limited controls on where you can drink
- Very lax licencing laws

But don't worry, now that that ideas probably out the way, theres room for the next one and this might make a fortune! Smile

Thanks for your input guys, thats why i like to post here, as if its not a good idea, someone will let me know, which saves alot fo time planning and looking into it, so i do appreciate it Cool

Drinking a shot in the rain doesnt appeal to me either, but if i passed it by, and it was cheaper than where i was heading, i may be tempted to save the money.

I didnt know the actual person needed a license! So there goes that 1 Wink

Back to the drawing board as they say lol,

Thanks again Smile

There is even a franchise operation that makes milkshakes out of funky things like toffeecrips and cornflakes and what not. It sounds a bit yuck but they taste devine.

I like the idea of smoothies. However it is very seasonal. You would probably need to get some PR going to get people talking about them.

You'd think but I had a milkshake from a Shakeaway last winter and it was cracking. Just the job.

In that case I am going to have to question your sanity Adi. I'll stick to the hot drinks in winter.

Yeah I agree with that. Also, health related drinks are becoming a big hit. There are a ton of health oriented beverage companies that could "supply" your business.
