As I created a couple of websites and added number of pages, I started having some problems managing my server. Also quiet frankly, there are so many things that I know practically nothing about, yet necessary to know in order to manage the server. How do you all monitor your website(s) closely? Do you buy a bunch of books to study this? Do you take classes to learning this? Do you basically outsource this?

No, more like ...

1. Set up robots.txt files to control traffic

2. Monitor the database closely and configure it so that it provides the best performance while it doesn't lock up

3. Check memory usage of each process, and if necessary, kill or restart the process. If it's absolutely necessary restart the entire server, etc.

3.2. Monitor, configure web servers.

3.2.2. Monitor, configure scripting languages like php, perl, etc.
