Handling phone calls can be time consuming, and it can interrupt your work flow. Suppose that you're writing a proposal. I think you want to focus on it when you work on it. How do you handle phone calls efficiently so that you don't get interrupted so often?

Put the answer machine on, turn the volume right down and turn the phone ringer off. I have a policy of getting back to clients within an hour of them calling so as long as I check the machine every hour I'm usually OK.

In my case a good chunk of my calls are from salesmen anyway and so the answer machine usually sees them off.

Regards

Phones....evil things designed to loose us money and increase stress, ban 'em all I say, go throw them from the nearest high cliff!! Well, except mobiles but they must have the ringer turned off and only be able to text, no video functions allowed.

The answering machine - that be a very mysterious device designed to double the profits of the phone companies. Instead of just making one call, there are usually 2 calls involved (one to the machine and the return one) thus they are even more evil than the phones which they sit beside! Throw from an even higher place...

Oh and be warned, there be a new dark force lurking in the shadows. Just when you throught ADSL was only there to use for e-mail, a company calling themselves Vonage have come up with an extremely evil plan to allow you to make calls via the very same ADSL line....are we not to be spared from the turmoil of said phones!?

Trev - who detests the very object sitting beside him! Wink

Can record 36 mins of messages - thats all very well, but can you make any sense of the messages when it plays them back? Wink

Maybe mine's just not very good or maybe it's the same hearing problem I've got with phones (another reason I dislike them), but the one at home I have to listen to so many times before I can make out what people are saying most of the time. Bring back tapes - all is forgiven!

OK so am I the only that uses voicemail? I haven't had a dedicated answering machine--business or personal--in something like 10 years. Pretty much all the telcos over here in the states offer voicemail for about $1/month.

Doesn't really seem to have taken off over here in the UK except private systems within large companies. There is a very basic one you can get with BT and I think a slightly better paid one, but thats a bit more than $1/month.

Maybe you have people calling you that speak in a totally different language to you.

from the work I do many of my clients do not have an internet link, so e-mail is out. I agree with the answer machine method but I use one trick. I asked a friend to tape the answer machine message, then when people ring they don't know your voice and it makes it easier to be the obstinate secretary for some of the more pushy sales staff. One thing I did notice, I am a small business, yet why do companies wanting to offer me health cover for my staff, as long as I have 200 staff minimum? Don't companies do a little bit of reasaerch before they ring? I think not.
